Hyaluronic acid: what it is and why we love it so much!

Hyaluronic acid is one of the main components of connective tissue and is naturally produced by our bodies, as well as from the body of many animals and bacteria. In the INCI of a cosmetic product, it appears as Sodium Hyaluronate, and if you have ever used one of those apps that analyses cosmetic formulas to tell you how natural and environmentally friendly they are, you may have run a red light by entering this ingredient. This is because it is not possible to identify the origin of an ingredient from an INCI, and since until a few years ago hyaluronic acid was extracted exclusively from animals and in particular from cockscombs, it could certainly not be considered a sustainable and vegan ingredient. Today there are various methods of obtaining this important active ingredient, such as through the fermentation of certain plants, and it is precisely this type of hyaluronic acid that we have chosen to use in our cosmetics.
But let’s take a closer look at how this ingredient works and why it is considered to be a powerful ally of the skin. The hyaluronic acid produced by the body plays an important role in our connective tissue, where it works to maintain a good level of hydration, plumpness and plasticity of the tissues and therefore of our skin. This is due to the great capacity of hyaluronic acid to retain water, acting as a sponge capable of holding it in quantities up to 1000 times its weight. As we all know, as the years go by, our bodies produce fewer and fewer substances meant to keep the skin toned and plastic, including hyaluronic acid. This is why it is important to reintegrate this important active ingredient through the use of cosmetic products. Hyaluronic acid is marketed in different molecular weights. Molecular weight indicates the size of a molecule, and the larger it is, the harder it will be for it to reach the deepest layers of the skin. Actually we want hyaluronic acid to be present in every layer of the skin, so that it acts both at the deepest level to keep the skin plastic and at the most superficial level as an important water reservoir, so every molecular weight can be useful for our skin. As we have mentioned, most of our products contain hyaluronic acid, and in our Serum Hyaluronic3 it is also available in 3 different molecular weights, for all-round moisturising and preventive action!
